Drew Brees
Drew Brees was the Texas Class 5A Most Valuable Player in 1996 while leading Westlake High School to a 16-0 record. Brees attended Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. He left Purdue with Big Ten Conference records in passing yards (11,792), touchdown passes (90), total offensive yards (12,693), completion percentage (.611), completions (1,026), and attempts (1,678). He also led the Boilermakers to the 2000 Rose Bowl, Purdue's first appearance in Pasadena since 1967. Brees was a finalist for the Davey O'Brien Award as the nation's best quarterback in 1999. Brees won the Maxwell Award as the nation's outstanding player of 2000. Brees was also a finalist for the Heisman Trophy in 1999 and 2000. Drew was drafted by the San Diego Chargers with the first pick in the second round in 2001. He played in his first-career game on November 4, 2001, against the Kansas City Chiefs. Brees won the starting job over Doug Flutie during training camp before the start of the 2002 season, but was later replaced during the 2003 season by Flutie. Drew's career with the Chargers was put in jeopardy after San Diego drafted N.C. State's Philip Rivers with the fifth pick in the 2004 NFL draft, but Brees perserved to remain the starter throughout the 2004 season and jump to near atop the league's statistical rankings. Brees becomes a free agent after the 2004 season, and is not expected to return to San Diego, which has already committed a large sum of money to Rivers. However, the team has an opportunity to keep Brees by designating him as a franchise player.

Eli Manning
Eli Manning, who played college football at the University of Mississippi, was considered to be the top prospect prior to the 2004 NFL Draft and became a source of controversy and speculation for adamantly stating that he would not play for the San Diego Chargers, who owned the first pick in the draft. Despite this the Chargers went ahead and drafted Manning with the first pick, but traded him shortly thereafter to the New York Giants for their first round pick (4th overall), N.C. State quarterback Philip Rivers. Manning began the season as the backup quarterback for the Giants, behind two-time league MVP Kurt Warner, who the Giants signed in 2004 shortly after he was released for salary cap reasons by the St. Louis Rams. Manning's first regular-season NFL play was in the first week of the 2004 football season, taking over for Warner with three minutes left in the game as the Giants were losing to the Philadelphia Eagles, 31-10. Manning handed the ball off to running back Tiki Barber, who ran 72 yards for a touchdown. For the first nine games of the season, Manning only saw limited action, usually in mop-up operations towards the end of games. However, after Kurt Warner began to struggle midseason, losing three out of four games, Manning was given the start in a November 21 game against the Atlanta Falcons. After a rough first half, Manning threw his first touchdown pass in the second half, a 6-yard pass to Jeremy Shockey. However, the Giants ultimately lost the game, 14-10. Eli Manning is the son of former New Orleans Saints quarterback Archie Manning, and the younger brother of Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning.
